| ... is a chair, to sit
down. man the sitter. every modern architect worth his creative salt,
from meis van de rohe to frank gehry, has felt the need to try his
hand at designing a chair. gertrude stein has written, "the first
thing i look for when i go to a museum is a bench." dance
and music. matisse made a series of small clay sculptures after
a cezanne painting of bathers (which he owned). dance and music are
after the two matisse paintings, "dance" and "music" (which i do not
own but are in the hermitage museum). they are an exposition of the
bridge between "art" and "not art." both "music" and "dance" from
the s. doute museum of not art are prototypes, and reproductions will
be made on order. base and background pieces will be the same size
as the original and as far as is possible all colors will be the same.
the figures will be a close interpretation of the original, reproducing
the "spirit" of the piece. each piece will in this way be its own
original. with each sale, the price will increase by $150. starting
price is $1,500. each piece is signed: s. doute. photography.
as i am not a trained photographer, i think it relevant to include
here a few remarks by henri cartier-bresson that act as watchwords,
inspire me, give me courage, and help me stay on course. "we must
neither try to to manipulate reality while we are shooting, nor must
we manipulate the results in the darkroom. these tricks are patently
